What is the best pet friendly approach to mosquito control in the yard?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

This style really works. This one is a bit expensive but it gives you the idea. These work by burnning propane/gas. The reason this works is one maybe the main technique that mosquitos use to find you is carbon dioxide. Yeap your breath. By burning the gas very slowly they put out a trail that leads the mosquitos back to the trap where they are dispatched in one fashion or another. There are no poisons or deadly fumes to worry about your pets.

This one does like a whole acre it says. You probably don't need that much protection. Just remember where you place these is very important.

Good Luck!

Well with any such device there is a small fire risk but they designed to be held in place usually by pins or bolts or what have you. And the flame is all contained internal. It's not the heat that they care about it's the CO2. I've not read about any such incidents but that doesn't mean they don't exist.

Hope that helps!

That sounds good. My only concern is fire. With it being gas powered - is there a fire risk?

Firstly if you have any standing water in your yard you should tip it out. Ponds and the like should have some fish in them to eat the larvae.

Next choose a combination of the following plants for your garden, and especially in the entertaining area.

Citronella Grass - This is what citronella oil is made from.

Catnip - A mint variety that cats love too!

Marigolds - Big beautiful golden flowers.

Rosemary - Great with lamb and can have blue or white flowers, they are very easy to propagate and are hardy.

Bats would be the number one choice. But most people can not have bats where they live because they live in the city. (Wild bats)

Any type of Natural Mosquito Repellent

Make your own
INSECT REPELLENT SPRITZER

Materials:
lemon peels and/or orange peels
mint leaves and/or pennyroyal leaves and/or sage leaves
rubbing alcohol or witch hazel

Directions:
(Note Do Not use penny royal if you are pregnant or wish to become so.)

Make a strong tea with the peels and the mint leaves. You can use each ingredient separately if you like or combine them to suit your sense of smell. Its best to soak the ingredients over night in a covered pan. The next day strain. Mix the strong herbal tea half and half with either witch hazel or rubbing alcohol and put in a spray bottle. Spray your self down before going outside in the evening.

INSECT REPELLENT OIL

Materials:
Salad oil of any kind (but olive is preferred)
lemon peels and/or orange peels
mint leaves and/or pennyroyal leaves and/or sage leaves
glass jar sterilized
pan to heal oil

Directions:
(Note Do Not use pennyroyal if you are pregnant or wish to become so.)

Place torn leaves and peels packed in a sterilized glass jar. Heat oil to 160 degrees F. Pour over herbal mixture in the jar to completely cover. Place top on, and let sit in a dark place for at least a week. A month is better. Rub this oil on before hikes or out side activities where one might sweat off a spritzer.

FLEA REPELLENT FOR DOGS

(NOTE: Do not use this on cats. Citrus is toxic to cats in large amounts.!!!)

Materials:
citrus peels
water
pan

Boil left over citrus peels in a pan of water. Pour over your dog after a bath rubbing into the coat. It will make your dog smell like an orange. It will kill fleas AND keep them off your pet.

If you don't want to spray liquids over yourself, I've read somewhere about a repellent spray that you can spray everywhere in your garden and that was based on garlic.

Besides that, there is an overview of some methods here: http://www.cleverandeasy.com/Travel/mosquito-repellent-solutions-compared.html The Thermacell looks interesting to me if it's only for the moments that you want to spend outdoor.
