''Once Upon a Time in the West'' has a killer opening. Vintage Sergio Leone. Lots of repetition and mounting tension in the moments before a big gun fight. Possibly the most badass scene of Charles Bronson's career...a guy known for badassness. It's something of an homage to ''High Noon'', but in many ways surpasses even that classic film.

I also think any discussion of great opening sequences has to include ''Raiders of the Lost Ark''. Pretty much the entire (long!) action scene has become iconic, and the image of Indy grabbing for his hat underneath the rapidly-closing door and racing away from the boulder are synonymous with the character in popular culture.

Good choices. ''Once Upon a Time in the West'' is a great film, but I'd forgotten how it opened. Thanks for reminding me with a killer clip!

There must be some really good spaghetti Western ones as well.

Contact with Jodie Foster - talk about putting our home world into perspective! I think this introduction for the movie was perfect for the theme.

The "Dawn of Man" sequence that starts "2001: A Space Odyssey." Brilliant, awkward, and structurally paralells the rest of the film.

It's an interesting one, but the ape suits make me think of Monty Python for some reason. :)

This is not Monty Python though...

Yeah, this one definitely occurred to me as well. It's startling and peculiar, kind of putting you off guard for the rest of the movie and letting you know you are about to have a real "cinematic experience" - to see something bigger-than-life, epic in scope and provocative.

This is a hard question. There can be many. It depends on what you like, know or admire about cinematography. It also depends on what movies 'move' you.

The first movie that popped into my head was Touch of Evil (1958).
It has the longest long tracking shot (at the time) on record. It's one of the greatest opening scenes ever.

Even a more recent movie The Player paid homage Orson Welles and his great long shot opening take. It has since become a part of movie history. I watched this opening scene about 10 times when it first came out on video tape.

But now let's talk about personal taste. Me? I have grown up with and love Alfred Hitchcock. My favorite opening sequence would be Rear Window. I love how the camera introduces all characters in the movie that live in his apartment building.

(I would normally add the Rear Window intro here, but the quality on youtube is atrocious)

I love Rear Window but I can't remember the opening sequence.

But here's a contender for best opening:

There are no doubt about that the first 5 minutes of Antichrist by Lars Von Trier. Amazing. maybe the best scene ever filmed.

I love the opening pre-credits sequence to all the Bond films. But I'll go for Goldfinger, as it set the template for all those that followed...

Yes, Bond has some good openings. This one is the most memorable for me:

The old couple at the beginning of When Harry Met Sally takes the cake.

(You don't get to it until about 2 minutes into this clip.)

The opening sequence to the Dawn of the Dead remake was quite spectacular really.

For best, the opening sequence to 28 months later, sequel to 28 days later, were just incredibly intense and frightening

For me, the opening of Coppola's "One From The Heart", where the camera starts from overhead Las Vegas and in an apparently single shot ends inside a shop window on the Strip is just wonderful.

It is true that I may be the only person in the world who thinks this is a great film overall.

Interesting. I found the opening on YouTube (see below). Watching it again for the first time in a good long while, it is so different from what I remember. Somehow I had edited out the full 4 minute opening credit sequence, linking the opening shot of the earth with the final 40 seconds. So, I withdraw it as a candidate, but am glad to have watched it again.

Since you have withdrawn it as a candidate, I won't vote up your answer, but thank you for your efforts!

If you think of another film you'd like to nominate, feel free to add it as a comment, and I will take that as your answer.
