There are four basic medications that are prescribed to treat Osteoporosis. They are Fosamax, Actonel, Boniva, and Reclast. The scientific name for these medications is Bisphosphonates. Sometimes hormone medication is added to treat the condition. Bisphosphonates have been tested and found to have a high safety rating mostly because they only treat a patient’s bones. If hormones are added there is always some concern because it is known to also affect other areas of the body. Some of these areas are breast tissue and the circulatory system.
As far as which medication is best to treat your Osteoporosis, the answer depends on a few factors such as preference, convenience, and adherence to dosing schedule. If, for example, your doctor wants to put you on a medication where you are only treated once a month, but you are concerned that you may forget to take your medication that infrequently, then it may possibly be better for you to take medication once per week.
Two medications have been approved for treatment by injection. The first if these is Ibandronate (Boniva injection) and it is taken every three months. The second is Zoledronic acid, or (Reclast injection) and it is taken once a year.
