What is the best LCD TV I can get for a reasonable price (<$1000)?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Samsung is a quality brand. If you don't care about having 1080p, then this would be better:
Samsung 42" Class Plasma HDTV w/ Digital Tuner, PN42A410

What 1080 means is that the screen can fit in more vertical lines. This makes for a really sharp and realistic picture. "p" means progressive scan, meaning the TV is constantly drawing a picture line for line.
The only reason you would need 1080p is if you want to watch Blu-ray movies, OR if you have "On Demand". Most cable "On Demand" movies are in 1080p. If you watch a 1080p movie on a 720p screen, it will still look awesome, but you won't get the full potential. 720p is still HD though, and for most content looks great.
Broadcast and regular cable networks are in 720p, or 1080i. Most sports are broadcast in 720p.
Again, Samsung in my opinion is the best quality. I have seen other TV's out there at cheaper prices, but they were not as good quality.
