If you're going to be using AutoCad or any other 3D modeling software, you'll need one with at least 1GB of RAM. For electrical or computer engineering, you'll probably not need AutoCad, and the requirements are much less involved.
Also, if you need AutoCad, you'll want to have Windows (preferably XP, but Vista is fine). For computer or electrical, Linux is probably a better choice.
Since you budget is under $1000, Apple Mac's are out as you cannot find one with those specifications for that price.
The Dell XPS M1330 fits all of the requirements quite nicely, and it's light weight so you can carry it with you at school.
