I'm a bit of a vacuuming fanatic, and I love my Dyson DC14. It's known as "the vacuum that does not lose suction." I have had mine for 2 years now, and it still works just as well as the day I got it.

Here are some of its key features:

  • Bagless technology with a clear bin prevents you from having to spend time and energy with bag replacements
  • HEPA filtration removes airborne particles and allergens for cleaner air; certified asthma friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America
  • No loss of suction (using the IEC 60312 Cl 2.9 test standard)
  •  Brushbar turns off to protect rugs and delicate floors
  • 17" quick-draw hose expands at the touch of a button for instant stair cleaning and gets under low-to-the-ground furniture
  • Wide channel picks up bigger pieces without the fear of breaking your vacuum
  • Telescope reach allows you to access high places with ease
  • Auto carpet-height adjustment maintains constant contact with floor to maximize dust pickup
  • Edge-cleaning whiskers are angled to nudge their way into those hard-to-clean areas for thorough results
  • 35.4' cord provides you with a wide cleaning range

This diagram shows how the Telescopic Reach works:

There is also a version made specifically for homes with pets that is a little more expensive, however I can't really find enough difference in features to explain the cost difference. My regular DC14 works great at picking up pet hair in my home.

It retails for around $400. The cheapest price for a new one (not refurbished) is $339 from the following site:

Best Vacuum could be the Kenmore Progressive 36932. Its a great vacuum cleaner with a lot of power behind it. It is bulky and big, which makes cleaning quick.

If you have pets, and lots like we do with a new house and you buy anything other than a Dyson Animal you are missing the boat. To get it under 500 we used a 20 % coupon from Bed Bath & Beyond. This is the number one vacuum with Consumer reports for quality, reliability and performance. These are never on sale except for the coupon we used. I own Honda lawn mower and I'm sure It will last 20 years and expect the Dyson Animal to do the same . You get what you pay for and the example listed for 149.00 seems cheap for the features and guess what I assure you I will still have my Dyson when you are on your third Walmart Vacuum. We are pollen sensitive and now have virtually zero dust now. Empty the canister is super easy and clean. It even beat the Kirby Vacuum priced at 900.00 ! It is the best period

Dyson makes a vacuum cleaner made to handle pet hair / dander.  I'm not sure of the price BUT if you watch Woot.com they have refurbished ones on a regular basis.

I would buy a Miele Vacuum.  I have an Italian Sheepdog, 80lbs long white hair.  The Miele vacuum works great.  Since it is a canistar it works great on hard floors and carpets.  This company ships free.

I just bought a Eureka Boss 4D Pet Fresh Vacuum at Christmas. I LOVE it. I have 2 cats and 2 dogs, and it works great at picking up hair. It also has:
  • On/off brushroll controls at your fingertips
  • Self-cleaning 36" telescopic duster for blinds, shelves and more
  • Sealed HEPA filtration captures up to 100% of allergens and dust mites
  • Power Paw stair brush with Riser Visor cleans stairs, upholstery and pet hair
  • Nested wands and crevice tool extend to 12' for hard-to-reach places
I bought mine at Wal-Mart for about $149.00. Here's the link for the vacuum:
