What is the best hotel for kids with special needs in Austin, Texas?

Tip for best answer: M$2.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

That could depend on whether they're your children or whether you're taking a group of children on a field trip. It could also depend on whether they are physically disabled or mentally disabled.

Hotels are required to be accessible to the disabled. On trips with physically disabled relatives, I have found that anything in the Hilton family (1) is good; most locations have sprawling, flat lobbies, etc. and convenient elevators. Hilton is also good price wise, with hotels ranging from their famous originals to more affordable hotels like Embassy Suites or Doubletree.

Finding locations for children with mental or emotional disabilities is unfortunately not something I know about firsthand and it's difficult to research. However, I have found through my searching that parent/academic conferences in Austin on the subject of special needs children are largely held at Embassy Suites or the Renaissance Austin Hotel (2), which is part of the Marriott family. Like I said, I really like the Hilton chain. And Marriott is equally good. Plus both usually have adjoining room options and swimming pools.

A way I have found good hotels for my disabled family is by deciding on a hotel that appeals to me and then phoning for information about special needs accommodations. For this, I find that I almost always need to speak to a manager, because front desk clerks are not fully versed in the subject.

You could also try posing this question at SpecialNeedsNeighborhood.com (3). It's a community resource for special needs children specifically in Austin, TX.

A list of resources for special needs traveling can be found at http://www.ucp.org/ucp_channeldoc.cfm/1/18/111/111-111/3910.
