It is my opinion that the best Harry Potter book is Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire, which is the fourth book. It incorporates the humor and whimsy with which J. K. Rowling had originally written. Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire also begins its dark descent into the return of Voldemort. It is the first book to exceed 500 pages. Also, the book goes beyond the one dimension of the single school year and Harry’s past and foreshadows the future books.
Many major characters are introduced in this book including Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody, Viktor Krum (who plays an important role in the final book), and Rita Skeeter. The three Unforgivable Curses (Avada Kedavra, Cruciatus, and Imperius curses are also introduced- so now readers know what actually killed Harry Potter’s parents, Lily Potter (formerly Lily Evans)) and James Potter. Harry and his godfather, Sirius Black become close in the fourth book. Other details that are in future books are the Room of Requirement, Fleur’s relationship with Bill Weasley, and Ronald Weasley’s jealousy toward Harry.
All in all, this book is really where J. K. Rowling began to turn her Harry Potter series into a well tied together story, which is why I think that Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the best book in the Harry Potter series.
