Clay is a difficult soil for flowers, the soil is very compact and does not allow the proper drainage required by most plants and flowers. Clay soils offer little organic matter which helps flowers grow well, but there are a few types of flowers that will thrive when planted in unaltered clay soils. Shasta Daisies, Echinacia, Lariope, Daylillies, Asters and Black-eyed Susans all grow well in clay soil.
The least expensive way you can enhance clay soils is by adding composted organic materials to the soil. Composted organic materials include things like grass, leaves and bark. Since clay soil is compacted, it's essential that you mix the compsted materials into the soil using a tiller. Adding this organic material to your clay every growing season will make the soil richer and will improve growing conditions.
