What is the best, fully accredited, affordable, online university that will allow me to take one credit hour at a time from home?

I am looking to finish a degree in education but I am a busy mom with no time to attend classes daily. I am looking for a totally self paced program that is flexible and attainable financially. Thanks.
Tip for best answer: M$3.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

University of Phoenix is an accredited and probably the most well-known university for online classes, but I don't recommend them, due to their excessive cost. They have some slightly unethical, in my personal opinion, tactics for getting people to register, promising financial aide will take care of things, and then finding out later the enrollment advisor was really just a salesman.

I took classes from UoP when I was getting some refresher courses before going to law school, and they are self-paced, you take one class at a time on a six-week class schedule, and then take a week break and take another six week class schedule, so you get a full semester/year in worth of credit hours, but you do it six weeks on and one week off at a time.

You don't take just one credit hour at a time - each major college class is worth three college credits, while PE and labs are usually one credit hour.

The only college most of my friends who attended UoP and became frustrated with then moved to was American Intercontinental University. They are fully accredited by an accrediting agency that is recognized by the department of education and are more than half the cost of UoP. AIU has some fantastic instructors there, and they accept all of the US government financial aid, so you can apply for pell grants, scholarships, and government backed student loans in order to attend.

You have an option of taking on class at a time, or two at a time, and it's all self-paced, but with assignment deadlines and online exams.

Here are the links to both;

AIU:

I really think AIU is the way to go if you want to take classes online. You can complete your entire degree with them if you want, and they even do a virtual online graduation and name call. It's kinda neat. My ex boyfriend got an associate's degree in general studies there, and another friend of mine got a bachelor's in criminal justice, and she is now working for a law enforcement agency in South Carolina, and is working on her master's degree!

Good luck with school!

Hi asenath – and thank you michelleldevon for the kind words about American InterContinental University Online. It sounds like AIU would be a great fit for you, as our programs are specifically geared toward people looking to balance a busy home or professional life with their education. I work with AIU and would be happy to answer any questions you have about us, either here on Mahalo or via email (jziegenmier@aiuonline.edu). Please let me know how I can help, and good luck in taking the next step!
