What is the best free word processing program for a Mac that has the ability to convert files to the Microsoft word format?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

NeoOffice is apparently based on Open Office, but may be more Mac-ified.

All you have to do is click on 'save as' and then use the pull down menus to change it to MS Word Document Format. It will then save it as a .doc file.
You can also find the settings to automatically open and save files in .doc format on OpenOffice.
OpenOffice does essentially everything I've seen MS Word do (though some of the editing/tracking features don't work nearly as well in OpenOffice). For a standard user just wanting to share documents with MS Word people, OO does everything you'll need it to do.
Like Philipy says, it also has a spreadheet application that is compatible with Excel too.
