I have read many articles about filling draft stoppers. If your stopper's filling has to be washable, you'll have to use something like polyester basting.

For a more efficient draft stopper, make the insides removable so it the outside can be washable and the insides can be filled with better installation. People fill them with rice, dry beans and even sand. However, from my readings I have found that the most beneficial material is ground corn cobs.

The draft stopper has been created as a result of extensive testing, during which it was found that ground corn cob was the best filling material available. You can be sure that you will not feel the effects of any leaking air if you put these in place.

bag of sand to use as a heavy filler.
poly fiber quilting (width of door plus 4 inches for stitching) about 41in X 8 in
a liner fabric (width of door + 4 inches for stitching)about 41in X 8 in
an outer fabric width of door + 4 inches for stitching)
about 41in X 9 in
door widths vary so measure yours before you start your project.

Cut a trash bag about 3 inches from the folded edge (double thickness). Use sealant tape to close up the open side. Now fill the tube with sand. Seal the open end with the sealant tape, rubber band or twine. Now wrap the poly fiber fill around the sand-filled tube. tape along the "seam". Stitch the sleeve for the liner fabric, turn seam inward, slip over the tube, hand stitch shut. Now stitch the outer fabric large enough to slip the tube inside it. Trim seam edges, turn seam in, slip tube inside, stitch shut and voile!

Another option for filler is to mix BB pellets (metal or plastic with styro pellets; less messy.)

I have used rice and polyester fiber-fill for draft stoppers. The rice gives it a bit of weight and helps keep dampness out, while the poly fill takes care of the draft. I agree with the other reply that suggests making a separate cover that can be washed, because draft stoppers on the floor can get very dirty!

If the draft is coming from any place other than a window or door I would recommend expanding foam insulation, if the draft is coming from a window or door, a draft guard should be used.
