M$There are so many 'hollywood' endings out there that have left a bad taste in my mouth, that when I good one comes along... it's like heaven!
What's wrong with having the hero die?!
Look at the ending in Gladiator. He does win in the end, AND gets to go home.

My personal favorite is the final scene of Chinatown. The first time I watched this masterpiece, I was duped until the last moment. Faye Dunaway and Jack Nicholson are suburb.
I must also list a few honorable mentions:
A Clockwork Orange
The Usual Suspects
Fight Club

M$A big YES! to "Chinatown," a fantastically downbeat ending that hits exactly the right note. NO WAY any studio would allow Polanski, or anyone, to end the movie that way today. Wouldn't happen.
and on the note of Polanski, I thought his newest film, "The Ghost Writer", had a great ending as well.

M$This is also one of the many many reasons I was angered by the remake. If you're going to replace such a masterfully-executed conclusion with something new, at least make it something INTERESTING. A montage of Denzel Washington going home from work is not that something.
It's also hard to find fault with the conclusion of ''The Third Man''. Interestingly, Roger Ebert has made a still of the film's last shot his wallpaper on Twitter. It's fitting.

M$I have always been in love with the movie The Crow, something about it is devastating, yet amazing at the same time. Plus is amazing in it. Ever since I first saw the movie, the final words have ALWAYS stuck in my head, and I will never ever forget them.

M$I LOVE ''Unbreakable'' and it's interesting to me that you've picked it as one of the best endings. I'm with you 100% - loved the way that the movie wrapped up, and the sort of late homage to its comic book roots - but it's not a popular sentiment. Anyway, good answer.
But who am I kidding, phillipy's cracked it with Butch & Sundance.

Both are definitely contenders. "Casablanca," without a doubt, is Top 10 Endings of All Time material. Just an amazing film.
