What is the best DSLR for less than $1,000?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I am not savvy with DSLRs or how to see best specs for them so I think I'd agree with the author who says that Canon EOS Rebel T1i is the best one.
"Canon EOS Rebel T1i offers 15.1 megapixels (highest public under $ 1000) and a large Creative Auto mode that teaches you how to take control over your camera's manual. Also available are 60 goals that work with this camera and 1080p HD video shooting."

Price range: $729.00 - $899.00

"The bottom line: A solid, slightly better-than-basic dSLR, the Canon EOS Rebel T1i delivers photo quality and performance that adequately compensates for most of its annoyances." Compare with other best-rated dslr's here: http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/canon-eos-rebel-t1i/4540-6501_7-33567129-4.html

I would recommend Nikon D3100. It's one of the best digital SLR cameras for beginners and pro photographers, good for stock photography and it costs a little more than 600$. It's really affordable, it makes high quality photos and its most definitely worth its price. I use it and I'm really satisfied with its quality and performance.

You are correct, the T2i will be superior until Nikon releases a new mid-range model later this year. Until they do there is no direct comparison, they're too different.

I think this is debatable. How is this camera better than the Nikon D90?

I believe this camera has also had it's position usurped by the Canon T2i. I'm not an expert, but I'd love to hear from somebody who can tell me more about the T2i, and it's strengths / weaknesses vs the Nikon D90.
