What is the best diaper rash ointment to use on a severe rash?

My brother' s baby got a horrible diaper rash due to a new brand of diapers they have let him wear lately. It is so bad that it is actually bleeding in spots. Is there some kind of special or extra strength diaper rash ointment that they could purchase to help this go away and stop hurting fast? Or would it be better to take him to the emergency room?

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Sever cases of diaper rash may need medical treatment, prescription medication to help it clear up. If the baby's rash hasn't begun to heal within 2-3 days after trying home remedies then it's time to seek professional help. If the baby develops a fever, or the rash becomes oozing blisters, pus or boils then by all means seek out medical treatment.

For home treatment try any diaper rash cream or ointment containing ZINC OXIDE.
Desitin
Balmex
Boudreaux's Butt Paste
A&D Diaper Rash Cream
Keep the area as dry as possible, changing more frequently and allowing the baby's bottom to air out as much as possible. Also the response about using the hairdryer is spot on based on an article I read a few years back. Aiming a hair dryer (set on cool) for 10-15 mins a day helps to speed the healing process.

A&D ointment always worked very well for me. Desitin is also very good.

Also make sure the baby gets a lot of time with their diaper off so the area can get some air.

You might give a call to the pediatrician about how severe it is they might prescribe something stronger than you can get over the counter.

On my son I always used the walmart brand it had the most Zinc Oxide in it. but he also used to get rashes so bad the doctor said it was a form of yeast and would give my son a Rx for Nystatin Cream. For now until you can go to the doctors. Try Maylox you know the stuff we drink for our tummies it will help to sooth. Hope this helps.

A rash caused by yeast infection will be red, where one from a bacteria will have blistering or sores with crusting (more than likely).

The best thing is to let that bottom get some air. Remove the diaper completely. Wearing a diaper of any sorts is just going to make it worst. Like the others said you need a cream to protect the bottom from wetness, when the diaper must be worn or during sleep. Avoid using a wet wipe that has perfume or any thing in it.. this is going to set the baby on fire. Keep the area as dry as possible. When you have to clean the bottom, clean with water or soothing aloe/Shea butter baby wipes... don't allow to set wet. You can blow dry their bottom off with a cool setting blow dryer... test before using.. the hot can burn.

I know the best remedy is to allow the baby to run wild in the buff. Diapers are just going to make it worst! Keep an eye out for when the baby will need to potty.
