What is the best desktop search application (must include Outlook 2003 in results)? And please explain why...

I've tried Microsoft's twice and it's not bad but it crashed alot and didn't have flexibility for things like wildcards. I've also an early version of Google, I kind of liked that...
Tip for best answer: M$10.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Google desktop Search:

-You can control precisely what it will index,
-It includes a toolbar for outlook. it gives you the power of google search right inside of outlook, and it can search all of your folders and archives. the search results display from, subject date and a snippet of the search results.
-it's fast, much faster than outlook's built in search.
-you can sort the results by any one of those fields.

Copernic Desktop Search is free and handles Outlook, so you might want to check that out. There is also a paid version that handles more searchable files and options. Other options that might be up your ally include Gaviri, or Ask.com's search. I am including the Wikipedia entry which lists desktop search engines in this reply so you can take a look yourself.

Are you using Windows or is this for a Mac. Considering you said Outlook, not Entourage I'll assume the former.

In that case the answer is easy. http://www.x1.com/

By far the best way to track just about every byte on your computer, including emails, attachments to those emails, everything.

I don't understand the question. What are you searching for?
Requiring Outlook to be included makes me think you are looking for emails or contacts.
Do you want to search locally or on the web, or both?
Are you looking for emails, files, or file contents?

I need something that will search locally, and must include Outlook 2003 (i.e. Search for all email from Bob X, with Donuts -chocolate in the subject line).

It should also search all files and contents and allow me to filter - i.e. Powerpoint files over 20MB...

I actually liked the yahoo desktop search. The main reason for this is that the results were highlighted. I could find things quickly. This was not my experience with Microsoft's desktop search or the Google desktop search (though I haven't used that for several years). A list of items (email, spreadsheets, documents) does me no good if I then have to search within each document for the terms I was originally searching on.

Microsoft has a desktop search included with Windows Vista, that is pretty quick and useful. I rather liked using it.

I have Win XP and I installed the XP version from this link:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/desktopsearch/default.mspx

It's very fast and works great. Although might slow down your boot times...

My problem wasn't as much boot time, as too many processor cycles devoted to indexing.
