You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Unfortunately all antidepressants have side effects and it depends on the individual as to what symptoms they will experience. Aside from seeing your doctor I would recommend Effexor SR from the selective Serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor family. I work in an acute psychiatric facility and this would be my first choice for a family member.

Also I would highly recommend the Clinical Handbook of Psychotropic Drugs 17Th edition – if you fell it would be useful for yourself (there may be a newer version but this was published in 2007). Unlike many pharmacology books I have read this is very easy to understand, find particular information (side effects, withdrawal uinformation) and is very comprehensive.

In very mild cases of depression St Johns Wort could be used however this should not be used for other cases. St Johns Wort also interacts with antidepressants so do not use it in conjunction with treatment. There is also some evidence that fish oil is helpful for depression.

With depression do not forget the risk of suicide. Also when people first start to get better from treatment the risk of suicide is increased as people now have the enegry to carry out a suicide attempt.

Best Wishes

I think this is a question best answered by your own physician. There is such a wide range of medications used to treat depression and what works well for one person may not work well for another. Your doctor can evaluate your health situation and then determine what will best meet your individual needs. I know from experience that what works well for a friend or family member did not work well for me. Not every one will experience the same benefits or the same side effects as others.

Until you can visit your doctor you may consider getting some exercise and sunshine if you are not doing so already. Exercise and sunshine increase endorphins which aid in lessening the effects of seasonal depression. If you are feeling overwhelmed and panicked then seek immediate medical attention at your local Emergency Room. Best of luck!
