What is the best Content Management System + e-Commerce solution for a web startup retail business?

We started with Drupal and the e-Commerce plugin, but it is a bit clunky. We are willing to pay a monthly fee, but the solution has to be awesome. Our inventory is small, so the CMS features are more important than the e-Commerce features.
Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I have always had good luck with Wordpress as a CMS. With the huge number of plugins available for it there is the ability to do just about anything you can dream of with it.

If you are looking for a .net CMS with e-commerce site take a look at Kentico CMS (http://www.kentico.com/cms-asp-net-features/Feature-Matrix.aspx). They have a free version that offers a good testing scenario with the ability to sell 10 items, if you want more you will have to go with the pro version which is a bit expensive depending on your needs. If you are looking for a php play, I agree Wordpress is really easy to use but the e-commerce plug-ins I have tried seemed limiting.

Try this one, it's a little expensive, but a decent value.

Magento has been getting good reviews. The landing page feature should take care of your CMS needs, while giving your the ability to include programmatic element like tag blocks within the landing page. This is open source software, but with professional support available. I've included links to the main site, landing page tutorial and a positive review in the sources.

There are many CMS out there but I think one of the best ones is Joomla, it's an award winning CMS, very easy to use, lots of commercial and non-commercial apps called plugins and extensions(more than 4,000), both the commercial and non-commercial extensions offers great solutions for almost every kind of web requirement, one of several great e-commerce extensions for Joomla is VirtueMart which is a cart solution, give it a try!!

Wordpress won't power a high quality e-commerce website. My company has software that powers the leading online candystore in the us - http://www.gourmetcandystand.com I would recommend using a standalone e-commerce website sub domained off your existing domain (e.g., http://store.yourdomain.com) and run your regular website off the CMS of your choice. Call or email me (Jason) if you want more information. My company contact information is at http://www.kmg.net Best of luck to you!
