What is the best company to get health insurance from if you are a freelancer?

I would like to have:
  • A low co-pay for both doctor visits and prescriptions
  • Specialists visits covered (mental health, etc.) - I don't mind getting a referral
Nice to have:
  • Dental coverage
  • Ability to add pregnancy coverage
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Try the link below. You fill out a few questions and they give you plans based on your answers. You can also compare them. Humana is one of the best I've seen and dental insurance can be included too, not just a dental "plan". BCBS comes a close second.

Exactly which company will give you the best rates will depend on your personal circumstances. Here's some info that may help.

Here's some information on plans in Pennsylvania that provide assistance to the currently uninsured: http://www.diabetes.org/advocacy-and-legalresources/insurance/pennsylvania.jsp

If you're a freelancer, you may be eligible to join a group through your local Chamber of Commerce-- they usually offer group rates to member "companies"-- and the advantage of the group rate may outway the membership fee of about $250.

If you are young and healthy, you might want to consider a very high deductible plan that is offered with a Medical Savings Account. http://www.pahealthaccess.org/health-savings-accounts-high-deductible-plans
