What is the best brand of whole wheat pasta out there and why?

Trying to get away from overly processed foods in my diet, but I LOVE pasta. The whole wheat pastas I've been purchasing have been hit or miss. I'd like to just go into the store and know that I'm looking for a certain, consistently reliable, great-tasting pasta. Any recommendations?

If you want to get even further away from processed foods you may want to eliminate wheat all together, I have heard that many people are mildly alergic to wheat and don't realize it, the way to tell is if you get very sleepy after eating pasta or bread. I am a vegan who does not eat wheat, I have noticed an increase in energy since stopping wheat, I use quinoa pasta now. it is much higher in protein and tastes more like white pasta than the whole wheat pastas but is not processed, it is supposed to be one of the healthiest grains you can eat since the proportions of amino acids in quinoa grain (not technically a grain but many people call it a grain) most closely resemple that of what the human needs to synthesize protein. They actually sell it at most stores, and the nice thing is it's hard to overcook quinoa pasta, it always has an al dente texture, very nice.

Unfortunately the article I've linked below is a bit old, but Consumer Reports is usually a good resource for finding some of the better brands of many products including whole wheat pasta.

That said, I've tried Ronzoni and Barilla and both have been fairly good, but I think you'd have the best results by making your own pasta using whole wheat flour.

An acquaintance of mine ran a business years ago where he would create fresh pasta and sell it to local stores. Of all the pasta I've ever tried that was definitely the best, the only thing that comes close now is the prepackaged pasta now seen in refrigerated sections in the store (that might be an easier option if you don't want to churn out your own).

Personally I like the Hodgson Mills spinachi - *not* the regular whole wheat pasta. The HM regular has an unpleasantly mealy taste and texture. The spinach added to the whole wheat spinachi astoundingly overcomes this deficiency. The down side? It's green. Eating spinachi with bolognese sauce reminds me of that joke, "what's red and green and goes 'round and 'round in a blender..."

Still, if you can overcome the odd Christmas-y appearance, it tastes just as good as the non-whole-wheat boxed pasta.

Costco carries a WONDERFUL organic whole wheat spaghetti by Pasta Garofalo in Italy. See www.pastagarofalo.it to see what the bags look like. (Unfortunately it's all in Italian and the English section doesn't seem to work well.) Most whole wheat pasta tastes a bit... gravely, for lack of a better word. Not smooth, like you'd expect it to. But Garofalo tastes just like you'd expect pasta to, so they must have ground it up very well. Anyway, it's our favorite, and we've tried many many brands looking for a good whole wheat pasta.

If you have a Trader Joe's near you, they have great whole-wheat pasta in a variety of shapes and very inexpensive, to boot.

Other than that, I think Barilla's is good. I'm not sure who makes it for TJ's, but it might be Barilla. They tend to pick whichever the best quality maker of an item is and go with them to produce their private-label things.
