What is the best book you've read in the past year or so?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The Good Earth by Pearl S. Buck. It is a book that chronicles pre-revolutionary China. The story begins on Wang Lung's wedding day and follows the rise and fall of his fortunes. The House of Hwang, a family of wealthy landowners, lives in the nearby town. As the House of Hwang slowly declines due to opium use, frequent spending, and uncontrolled borrowing, Wang Lung, through his own hard work and the skill of his wife, O-Lan, slowly earns enough to buy land from the Hwang family.
Wang Lung has a remarkable wife, O-Lan who bears two sons and a daughter and is a picture of strength, poise and beauty (even though everyone thinks her plain and a slave) as she perseveres through unimaginable hardship when the famine hits. She delivers on her own and goes back to till the earth on that very day-quiet, thoughtful and strong.
Through her skill and unfortunate history of slavery, Wang Lung owes all his prosperity to her. He just does not know it and behaves very unbecomingly towards her.
It is a story of humanity and the sheer will to survive with the help of the good earth.
