My vote is for the blendtec blender. This thing is amazing; every other blender I have owned did a pitiful job at making me a smoothie. I love the blendtec because it has timed setting buttons; there's one for smoothies, and the soup button even heats the liquid up. You can just press a button and walk away. When we first bought it we even made snow for a snow cone.

I use the Margaritaville DM1000 Frozen Concoction Maker. It's one of the best blenders for smoothies and frozen drinks. It's comparatively costly, but definitely worth the price. I'm very happy with its speed and durability. It has four preprogrammed settings and I can make a smoothie in about one minute.

You can also try the Oster Professional Series Blender and the KitchenAid 5 Speed Blender.

I've gone through several blenders in the past six years. I've found that the better blenders get the job done and last longer. My old blender a Kitchenaid 900-watts was great but I think I want one with more power to do even more. I'm currently considering this Omega blender as it is cheaper than a Blendtec or Vitamix but with about the same specs http://www.best-blenders.net/omega-blender-1/omega-countertop-blender-commercial-b2500/

The blender with the spout is the best! Here is a pretty good deal on one from Amazon for $50:

I like using my hand blender when making simple, easy to make smoothies, margaritas, and other drinks. Hand blenders are easier to use and don't sound loudly as much as regular blenders. I also like how versatile hand blenders are which can be used for mixing soup, whipping creams, blending drinks, and even chopping nuts. It is really multi functional that's why I always recommend this to my friends.

I am a professional bartender and for 6 years I worked at a very busy Mexican restaurant, we blended frozen Margaritas 12 hours a day everyday and without ever failing the VitaMix 5200 pulverized that ice and booze into smooth delicious Margaritas, virgin drinks, smoothies.. whatever. VitaMix is worth the cost.
