Right now, the best basketball videogame is Visual Concept’s NBA 2K11. The fact that it’s the only updated simulation basketball game available in the market right now is enough to crown it as the best.
Normally, the NBA 2K games would see competition from EA Sports and its Live series but for some reason, the latest NBA game offering from EA Sports (named NBA Elite) had to be cancelled. This might be because EA could not see it as being good enough to stand up to NBA 2K11. Plus, a lot of fans seemed to be disappointed with the demo of NBA Elite, and seeing how close it was to its release date, EA just had to pull the plug.
NBA 2K11 is available for almost every major platform out now (except the DS), but the best versions are for the next generation consoles and the PC platform.

The answer depends on everyone's opinion, of course. For me the best Basketball video game isn't anew one, it's an old one. I used to play it on the Nintendo 64 and I believe I even had it on the PSone. It was NBA Showtime: NBA on NBC, it had Shaq on the cover and the Lakers home court. I always enjoyed it, thought the game play was killer and never put it down.
I honestly haven't tried playing any of the newer games, because I'm not so much interested in sports like i used to be. I imagine there are some pretty sweet games out now, with all the advanced video game technology floating around, but if you are looking for a good classic game, definitely give Showtime a try!
