What is the best age for a child to be involved in Unicycle Hockey? Is this a safe sport?

Tip for best answer: M$0.17

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

While I have not played unicycle hockey I do ride unicycles almost everyday, so I may be able to help.

I think playing unicycle hockey would depend on the skill of the rider more than the age.

It would probably be good to have a basic skill set, including:
- Confidant forward riding
- Confidant backwards riding
- Idling
- Quick turning
- Spinning from forwards riding to backwards riding and vice versa.

As long as the child is a reasonable age to be playing sports (maybe 9 or 10) than you should be fine. A good place to look to find some good skills to learn in order to prepare the child would be the IUF skill levels. http://www.unicycling.org/IUF/levels/ It might be good to be about level 4.

Unicycling is fairly safe, but as with any sport it has risks. There is lots of equipment that could make it safer, including:
- Shin guards (protection from pedal bites)
- Helmet
- Wrist guards
- Knee pads
- Elbow pads

I wouldn't worry too much, injury should be pretty unlikely if you are wearing proper equipment. Most of all, have fun and good luck!

10 or older would be a good age to start unicycle hockey, assuming that the child is a confidant rider.

I think if the child is able to aggressively ride a unicycle, which itself is impressive in my book, than simply focusing the aggression in a team sport shouldn't be that much different.

As a previous skateboarder and aggressive inline skater, I can see the benefits of the unicycle:

* the unicycle is much easier to dismount, even when falling/leaning backwards.
* the speed of a unicycle rider is much slower than most other sports athletes
* in hockey, the action takes place on the ground, rather than close to the upper body and face of the rider, which will be protected by a helmet
* it would be so much more hilarious to watch!

I saw let the child go and see what happens!
