Age of onset for prebyopia can vary but majority of patients that need near correction is by age 45.

Presbyopia is a condition where the eyes unable to focus near objects, and it is the natural course of aging. The first symptom is usually happen between the ages of 40-50. For comparison, normal children's eyes can focus start from 50 mm away (20 dioptres).

Symptoms:
- Difficulty reading fine print, particularly in low light conditions
- Eyestrain when reading for long periods
- Blur at near or momentarily blurred vision
- Extreme presbyopes complain that their arms have become "too short" to hold reading material at a comfortable distance

Presbyopia is another way of saying "you need reading glasses in order to read books up close." Most people need reading glasses by age 42.

Ironically, other vision problems such as myopia may actually extend the age when reading glasses are needed. For this reason, slightly myopic people are not recommended to have LASIK because it will be beneficial to them later on.
