What is the attraction for adults to anime? Why are they not considered "just" another cartoon show?

My husband is really into anime and I cannot see why. He tells me that they are not just cartoons but that is all I see when I look at them. He finds the most obscure anime to watch and he cannot seem to get enough of them, and yet even when I watch with him, I still see them as cartoons. Why do you think he sees them as more than spending an hour or two watching Bugs Bunny, Scooby Doo or Superman cartoons?

I know exactly what you mean! My husband also is a huge Anime fan, but also likes cartoons as well such as Ben 10 and Danny Phantom. I think when they watch anime is that it is created with more adult humor than cartoon network cartoons. I personally like cartoons and anime shows SOME anime, I like InuYasha but to say that it's not exactly like a cartoon is a little off because anime and cartoons are both ANIMATED hence the word anime lol. It just boils down to people like what they like, and they will say anything to get respect on that matter. If they were to admit that anime shows they watch were the same as cartoons it wouldn't be as cool, same as if women were to admit that high heels didn't hurt to wear! We all have our stretches, some weirder than others.

Your husband says that animé is more than "just" cartoons because animé gives more depth to characters and plot. And it also depends on what kind of animé.

There are animé for children (such as Pokémon and Hello, Kitty), and there are animé for teenagers and adults. Animé for teenagers can be split into shounen ("boy") and shoujo ("girl"). Examples of shounen are Fullmetal Alchemist, Naruto, Bleach, and InuYasha, which are action. I don't know a lot of shounen animé since I prefer shoujo. Shoujo animé (and manga) include Fruits Basket and Vampire Knight. Both examples are romances with a bit (or a lot) of drama, which is exactly what most girls prefer.

Animé for adults can also be split into seinen (for men) and josei (for women). Seinen includes Rozen Maiden and Chobits. I'm not entirely familiar with the genre, but it often seems more psychological and "deep" as compared to shounen. Unfortunately, I have no examples for josei for I have yet to familiarize myself with the genre. However, I have noticed that josei is like a combination of shoujo and seinen, with its romance and drama plots mixed with elements that would appeal more to adults than teenagers. I will not bother to discuss hentai and ecchi, since I do not watch nor read either. I can say, however, that hentai is the "hardcore" kind of porn, while ecchi is often allowed for even those under 18 (soft-porn).

Also, I would like to note that "cartoons" are not always for children. For example, it is usually adults who prefer cartoons like The Simpsons and Family Guy because of all the adult humor in the shows. Similarly, there are also animé that are for adults and for children.
