Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I agree with the monetary side of speaking Japanese instead of, lets say, Tenek. Being able to translate from Japanese into any other language would leave a lot of money, because there aren't many translators (not as many as you would find in the Spanish-English market, at least) and Japan is a rich country.
Another advantage, which I prefer as a Spanish speaker, is that Japanese is more complex and not so close as English is to Spanish, so I'd have to leave some previous mental structures, think in a different way and challenge the way I interpret the world itself with my first language. To me that's gold.

I studied linguistics at school and I'm an unemployed English-Spanish translator.

One big advantage right now is, Japan is still improving economically, and is expected to be one of many world economic powers in two decades or so. So Japanese is one of the languages worth knowing, along with Russian, French, Chinese, and (still) English.

It's true that Japanese is not as practical as some languages--it's not spread all over the world, like English, Spanish, French, and (to a lesser extent) Chinese. I mean, you can run into Japanese speakers in places like Hawaii and Sao Paulo, but you don't NEED to speak it anywhere outside of Japan.

However, if you're a big nerd like me, you run into Japanese all the time, in the form of Japanese popular culture. If you know Japanese, you get to watch and understand movies that most of the world will never see. You get to read comics that will never get translated. And yes, you get to hit on cute Japanese exchange students. (Just stay away from my daughter.)

If you really want to learn it well, you have a great excuse for moving to Japan, where there are even more cute girls (and boys) to hit on, and where you will drown in Japanese pop culture. Of course, most people who do this don't know a word of Japanese when they arrive, but it certainly helps if you understand the language. Japan is not a bad place to live, if you enjoy teaching, for example, or working in the nightlife business.

If you are in business or technology, it's a nice advantage to have. Really, whatever field you're in, it's a good idea to speak the language of the people you will probably be dealing with.

Not that they need to *know* you can speak it. I found it very interesting to listen in to a conversation being held in front of me in French in the non-profit I'm involved with. The people speaking didn't realize I could understand them and were saying things they'd never say if they'd realized that anyone with any sway knew what they were saying. I wonder if they ever realized why their nefarious plot went wrong, teehee!

You can walk into any MacDonalds restaurant and hold a conversation in perfect Japanese with the person behind the counter. You say "hi!" and they will say "hi!" back.

many advantages come from speaking a second language... whether or not its japanese.

I worked in the restraunt biz for quite some time, and learned to pick up japanese. basaically cause 40% of our customers were from japan and barely spoke any english.

Japanese could benefit you in multiple ways, for one... the economy. you could benefit from being a interpreter. like the previous post above, you could also ask questions about japanese food your about to order(if you arent japanese).
