Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

According to Medline Plus, Ritalin (made by the company Novartis) is the brand name for Methylphenidate Hydrochloride (http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a682188.html). Another name for it is Methylphenidylacetate hydrochloride (http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/drug-information/DR601847). Other brand names for this substance are Concerta, Methylin, and Metadate.

Novartis, maker of Ritalin, states that the active ingredient, Methylphenidate Hydrochloride, is a fine crystalline powder that is white and odorless, soluble in water, methanol, and alcohol. The inactive ingredients in Ritalin are D&C Yellow No. 10 (5-mg and 20-mg tablets), FD&C Green No. 3 (10-mg tablets), lactose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, starch (5-mg and 10-mg tablets), sucrose, talc, and tragacanth (20-mg tablets) (as reported to the FDA: http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/drugsatfda/index.cfm?fuseaction=Search.Label_ApprovalHistory).

Methylphenidate Hydrochloride is used to alleviate the symptoms of ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) and narcolepsy (a sleep disorder). This drug belongs to a larger class of medications that are called CNS stimulants (Central Nervous System), meaning it changes the amount of substances occurring in the brain.

Ritalin is used as part of a treatment program to stimulate and change neurotransmitter levels in the brain. This medication can be habit forming, addictive, or cause withdrawal reactions. There are many side effects that may occur such as headache, stomach pain, vomiting, and nervousness, to name a few. You should check with your doctor about all possible interactions and side effects and report side effects to the FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088 (http://www.webmd.com/drugs/drug-9475-Ritalin+Oral.aspx?drugid=9475&drugname=Ritalin+Oral&source=2
