What is swimmers ear and can you avoid it?

I have never gotten swimmers ear personally, but my daughter just got swimmers ear and I am curious. Is swimmer's ear from swimming or swimming too much? How exactly do you get swimmers ear? Is it contagious? Are there any ways to avoid it next time? Are there any home remedies to treat swimmers ear? Can people be prone to swimmers ear? Any help would be appreciated!

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Swimmer’s ear is an infection of the ear canal. Bacteria enters the ear canal thereby causing the ear infection. The best way to avoid swimmer’s ear is to make sure your ears are kept dry and to dry them thoroughly after swimming and going under water. If you swim a lot, the ears are more likely to get infected. It is fairly easy to treat swimmer’s ear and by giving proper treatment to this infection will help avoid future and more serious infections and complications.

I used to get swimmer’s ear all the time and they used to have an ear drop on the market that you could use after swimming that would dry up the ear canal. That way you would be less likely to get the swimmer’s ear infection.

According to Mayo.com

At-home preventive treatment. If you know you don't have a punctured eardrum, you can use a homemade preventive eardrop before and after swimming. A mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 1 part rubbing alcohol may help prevent the growth of bacteria and fungi that can cause swimmer's ear. Pour 1 teaspoon (5 milliliters) of the solution into each ear and let it drain back out. Similar over-the-counter solutions may be available at your drugstore.

I hope this helps for your daughter! Good luck!
