A stroke is a cerebrovascular accident (CVA). Cerebro (brain), vascular (vessels: veins and/or arteries) accident (blockage or breakdown). A vessel in the brain either becomes blocked by a blood or fat clot. Or an artery can become weakened and burst (anneurism). This results in decreased oxygen to parts of the brain and is an emergency. Signs of a stroke may be headache, numbness/ tingling and/or paralysis of one or more extremities (arm or leg), drooping on one side of the face, and slurred speech.

The sudden death of some brain cells due to a lack of oxygen when the blood flow to the brain is impaired by blockage or rupture of an artery to the brain. A stroke is also called a cerebrovascular accident or, for short, a CVA.
