What is somniphobia?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

It is commonly defined as the fear of sleeping. However there is no scientific definition for the word and it doesn't appear in research journals nor scientific books.
It doens't mean the condition doesn't exist, they just didn't give it THE name.
There could be many reasons for this and one of them is because it is a very common sleep disorder.
Children who have experienced horrible nightmares are affraid of falling asleep. This type of sleep disorder is also common amongst the elder.

You will find it in wikipedia www.wikipedia.org
You won't find it in pubmed www.pubmed.com

I have a problem with this source because it is very commercial and it doesn't have any other source cited. What if these people are just taking advantage of people's phobias?

Somniphobia is the fear of sleep. Here are some symptoms: "breathlessness, excessive sweating, dry mouth, feeling sick, shaking, heart palpitations, inability to speak or think clearly, a fear of becoming mad or losing control, a sensation of detachment from reality or a full blown anxiety attack."

The truth is out there. But on the internet, so is a lot of rubbish! :)

This source has the same problem. It is highly commercial. The guy is trying to sell a solution for a very common problem.
I'm starting to think that these pseudo-scientists created the word for publicity and they posted the wikipedia article themselves.
Sorry, I'm getting all Mulder about it.

It's an unreasonable fear of falling asleep. It's also the title of a new movie directed by Hari Mahesh, where a U.S. Marine can't distinguish between the waking world and dreams, so fears sleeping.
