What is some good folk music cd?

Tip for best answer: M$0.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Hmm...there are a lot of good answers - it really depends on what you're looking for.

I like some older folk. Check out Simon & Garfunkel's "Old Friends" set for the ultimate collection from two of the greatest (in my opinion). Three discs of pure awesomeness, right there.

James Taylor is amazing. You can get a great overview from "The Best of James Taylor" - great CD.

Joni Mitchell does some amazing work. "Big Yellow Taxi" my favorite of all her stuff, but it's tough to go wrong with her in my opinion.

Oh, and I can't forget Janis Ian. "At Seventeen" is one of my favorite albums.

But I really dig new(er) acts, too.

I'd highly recommend Ani DiFranco is freaking amazing - check out "Canon," her two-CD greatest-hits collection. Her career's seen a lot of different approaches to music, with a huge variety of styles, so you're almost guaranteed to find *something* to love.

I'm also a big fan of Tracy Chapman (she was known for "Fast Car" in particular back in the 1990s, but does other, solid songs too); Suzanne Vega (she did "The Diner" - fantastic song); and Indigo Girls (can't think of any particular, well-known song off the top of my head, but a large chunk of their extensive discography is good stuff).

One of my favourite new(ish... it's from 2008) folk CDs is by a Swedish musician who calls himself The Tallest Man On Earth. The CD is called Shallow Grave. He's a fantastic guitar player and his voice is a little reminiscent of Bob Dylan.

Here are some recommendations:

> Hand Picked: 25 Years of Bluegrass on Rounder Records - a really nice compilation that is priced really inexpensively
> Pink Moon by Nick Drake - shimmering folk pop from the '60's that was way ahead of its time
> Another Side of Bob Dylan - perhaps the best album from Dylan's folk period
> Bootleg Series Vol. 1-3 by Bob Dylan - an outstanding compilation including much of the best of Dylan's early folk
> Ladies of the Canyon by Joni Mitchell - a fantastic early Joni album with hints of the jazz/rock influence to come
> A Mighty Wind Soundtrack - although it is intended as a parody of folk, it is in fact a wonderful homage the the Kingston Trio, New Christy Minstrels, and the like
