what is solar energy used for

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Solar energy (in the "green" sense) is used directly to do only two things:
1)produce electrical energy (via photovoltaic cells)
2) heat water

It can be used indirectly:
1)To provide indoor lighting
2)To provide heating and cooling via a ground source heat pump. This is called Ground Source Geothermal, or low temperature earth energy or earth energy exchange or ground source energy exchange.
Solar energy is stored in the first few hundred feet of the earths surface. A heat pump uses conventional refrigeration technology to upgrade this heat typically around 50 or 60 degrees F to over 90 degrees and it does this at high efficiencies typically over 400%.

Solar energy can be used to power homes in the form of a solar electric system with photovoltaic cells. This type of system harnesses the energy of the sun to heat water and provide electricity. It's a clean and natural system. One of the major drawbacks to a solar energy system is that it's very expensive to install and it must looked at as a long-term investment.
