What is socially acceptable at a family gathering where one member of the family tells inappropriate jokes around young ears?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The first thing to recognize is that different people have different ideas of what "appropriate" is.

I think this is a great opportunity for kids to learn that there are some people that say inappropriate things. They'll get that in the school yard and from their friends. Just because someone says inappropriate things doesn't mean they have to repeat it. What a great lesson!

If you feel safe/comfortable, you might consider pulling that family member aside and talking to them about it. They might get defensive, but at least you went the direct communication route.

The fact is, you can't control other people (hell, you can barely control yourself). You try to protect your kids as much as possible, but they're going to have to learn what is appropriate and what is not from YOU.

Oh... and remember, the more energy/attention you give something, the more your kids will take note of it. If you give these inappropriate little to no attention/energy, then your kids will probably not even notice it.

My parents just sent me off to play out of ear shot. Honestly though, most kids don't listen all that closely or understand what is going on. As long as your kids are 10 or younger I wouldn't worry too much about what they heard. I know when I was a kid people said stuff all the time when I was around that I didn't understand.
