Smart Starch is a trademark name registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office. This trademark name was filed in October of 2005 by Rakesh M. Amin of Chicago. This name was categorized within the "Staple Food Products" category. As filed, it was described simply as food starch. Food starch can be extracted from corn (corn starch) and potatoes (potato starch). Corn starch is processed to make corn syrup and that is enzymatically converted to be mostly fructose, a product called high fructose corn syrup.
I am not sure, but I am betting that the "smart starch technology" used by Nutrena Feeds is just that they add high fructose corn syrup to certain feeds, such as the horse feed called Vitality Mix. Some users have noticed that their horses get really jumpy after using this feed, so the response is similar to kids who eat a lot of sugary candy and get wild. There has to be a lot of sugars in this particular feed mix. I have had horses and minimizing this type of feed use and feeding them more grass hay was very useful in calming them down.
