Sleep aepnea is a potentially very dangerous sleep disorder that can lead to death. If you snore loudly when you sleep and feel tired even after a full night's sleep, then you may have sleep aepnea.

The most common form is obstructive sleep aepnea, which occurs when the throat muscles relax and close the airway. Snoring is very common and breathing starts and stops throughout the night while sleeping. Signs and symptoms include excessive daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, observed episodes of breathing cessation during sleep, abrupt awakenings accompanied by shortness of breath, dry mouth or sore throat in the morning along with a headache, frequent urination at night, difficulty staying asleep.

Risk factors include excess weight, large neck circumference, hypertension (high blood pressure), narrow airway, family history, smoking, use of alcohol. Complications may include daytime fatigue and cardiovascular problems.

Sleep apnea is a very serious sleep disorder, where a person’s breathing stops and starts repeatedly while he or she is asleep.

Sleep apnea is of three types, and they are caused by different factors. All these factors results from insufficient oxygen getting to the lungs while the person sleeps. They are;

*Central sleep apnea: this type of sleep apnea happens when a person’s brain does not send the right signals to the muscles that help to regulate or control breathing.

* Obstructive sleep apnea: this is a common type of sleep apnea and it occurs when the muscles at the back of the throat relaxes.

*Complex sleep apnea: this is a combination of both the Central sleep apnea and the Obstructive sleep apnea

Treatment of this disorder ranges from simple therapy to surgery.
