A sink hole occurs when ground water erodes the soil below the surface creating caverns or gaps in the earth, eventually the ground above "sinks" into the cavern creating a hole. To be plain, they occur because of ground water whether natural or human introduced.

You can read a whole lot more on the topic at the article in source. It also has a map showing areas most prone to skink holes.

An example of a sinkhole. Sinkholes are also not always so large, sometimes they can be very small, bucket sized even.

A sink hole is the erosion of land. It forms when underground water dissolves minerals in the ground. Sink hole creates a buried hole. As with other natural disasters such as hurricanes, floods or earthquakes, a sink hole can cause extensive damage to your home.

---quote--
Sinkholes are common where the rock below the land surface is limestone, carbonate rock, salt beds, or rocks that can naturally be dissolved by ground water circulating through them. As the rock dissolves, spaces and caverns develop underground. Sinkholes are dramatic because the land usually stays intact for a while until the underground spaces just get too big. If there is not enough support for the land above the spaces then a sudden collapse of the land surface can occur. These collapses can be small, as this picture shows, or they can be huge and can occur where a house or road is on top.

This answer contains none of your own words... at all and doesn't even offer new information as you even used the source from my answer. You didn't even find your own image.

Please, read these pages on Mahalo answers etiquette as they have been linked to you a plethora of times.
