A Shi'ite is a follower of the Shi'a branch of Islam and they believe that the rightful successor of the Prophet Muhammad was his son-in-law Ali, after the prophet’s son in law death the leadership of and authority over the community was then passed to a council of twelve scholars which they call the ulema, or council of Imams.
