The data is reviewed from The Gale Encyclopedia of Medicine 's entries.
Somebody who has RLS (Restless Leg Syndrome) moves the legs when is at rest or before sleep.
The person feels a tingling sensation in the upper leg, calf or foot.
The condition is accompanied by twitching and sometimes pain; the sensations are felt deep within the legs.
It also appears involuntarily.
It is relieved by walking or moving the legs.
Up to 10-15% of the people have RLS and is more common for the elders.
Almost half of insomnia patients have RLS. 85% of RLS patients have difficulty sleeping and half of them suffer of fatigue during the day. The symptoms can disappear for months and then recur.
Both legs may be affected but also only one leg or the arms.
The cause of this condition is unknown but believed to be a chemical reaction in the brain.
It is hypothesized that the cause is a transmission system in the central nervous system or the deficiency in iron. Older people with RLS have low levels of iron(ferritin); supplements of iron sulfates reduced the RLS in these patients.
