The REM in REM sleep stands for Rapid Eye Movement. Long story short... it's the cycle of sleep when you are actually dreaming. You can usually tell this stage by seeing the eye twitch under the eye lid. REM sleep is just one of five stages in the sleep cycle.

I'm just glad I'm not a dog and don't have RBM which stands for Rapid Body Movement when I sleep!

REM] stands for rapid eye movement. It is the middle stage of. If you have ever awakened and remembered what you were dreaming about, you were in rem sleep. Your eyes were “moving rapidly” because your brain had a dream going on in your head and your eyes were responding to that dream, shifting left and right in response to the stimuli you THOUGHT were there. They were, of course, all in your head.
Deep sleep does not contain dreams, so there is no rapid eye movement. Some people move straight through the rem cycle of sleep to deep sleep, and therefore rarely remember their dreams. A sleep study can determine where you normally fall. Unless you have some problems with sleep, there is little reason to go through the expense of such a study.

REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep is the fifth of five stages of sleep. It is characterized by quick movements of the eyes during sleep. In this stage, vivid images in the brain can issue commands to the body, such as jump, run or kick. Eye movements in various directions correspond with the types of actions reported by the dreamer. Generally, REM states repeat in 90-minute cycles. An average sleeper has four or five REM periods per night.
