What is psychotherapy?

How can this improve the behavior of individuals with ADHD? Is this therapy appropriate for both children and adults with ADD?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Psychotherapy is basically when someone chooses to see a licensed therapist to solve any emotional or mental problems, instead of using medication.

Each therapist and for each different problem a method is applied. Every therapist works differently but they all have thefundamental understandings to help people in the areas they specialize in. Through this talking therapy, they aim to get the client to believe in themselves, to overcome their obstacles, and hopefully start anew.

Now ADHD was once considered a psychological problem, and today psychotherapy is an important part of recovery for these patients. It is listed that psychotherapy addresses these problems for sufferers of ADHD: stress and anxiety, low self esteem, feelings of incompetence, grief over lack of accomplishments, poor social skill, or feelings of helplessness. To note you should know,

“None of these problems are part of the core symptoms of ADHD. Instead, they result from the psychological trauma that occurs as a result of having ADHD. Psychotherapy tends to focus on the development of better coping skills to help ease the impact of problematic situations. It does not eliminate ADHD symptoms. However, the appropriate therapy can help a child develop organizational skills, time management skills, and communication skills, which become essential to master as the child matures.”

This type of therapy is defiantly appropriate for both children and adults. You may also want to look into behavioral therapy if it turns out psychotherapy isn’t accomplishing much for you or the person in the situation.
