What is pre-writing?
What are the methods of pre-writing?
You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Good writers plan out what they're going to say before they put it down on paper, or try to develop an idea as much as possible before they write on the subject.
Some examples are:
The outline:
(1.Topic
a.subtopic
i.subsubtopic
ii.subsubtopic 2
b.subtopic
2.Topic 2)
Brainstorming
(writing whatever comes to mind:
banana, dollar, monkey, evil plot to take over the world)
Freewriting
(The world is a cruel, cruel place. There is little justice in it. There are too many people in it. Not that this is entirely a bad thing. The world has so much to offer, and it is all developed by the people in it. These people work hard, usually, and produce many things. Some of these things are good, and some of them are bad. Ect.)
Mindmapping
(
-politics
Deaths - The Johnson report - Money
)
among others.
A good program for prewriting exercises, as well as for organization, is called "thinking rock" which is available, for free, at http://www.trgtd.com.au/.

M$I think these definition pretty much answer your question regarding methods as well.

M$Some typical activities:
Clustering and mapping - these are more visual in that they are non-linear and are like word associations. This page has a nice picture of a cluster diagram http://www.sdcoe.k12.ca.us/score/actbank/tcluster.htm. Mapping is the same thing really, just another word for it.
Free writing is an activity where you basically put your pencil to the paper and start writing. You do not edit nor do you censor yourself. You get down as many ideas as you can for later use and incorporation.
Sometimes talking with people is also a good pre-writing activity. You can bounce ideas off each other.
Hope these help.

Excellent answer. I was going to take a crack at this question, but I can't think of much to add that would be of any significance.
