What is podcasting all about?

I often read podcasting in articles, blogs and forums. I even transcribed some podcasts but still I cannot fully understand what it is all about. Is is an application or a platform that we can use on the website? Who invented podcasts and when was it introduced? What are the benefits of using podcasts? Is it limited to website only? Any information on this would be a big help. Thanks!

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The first Podcast is said to have been Adam Curry, the former MTV VJ. He wanted to have a way where audio would be automatically downloaded to his iPod, so the strict definition of podcast was born. What Curry and his associates did was include audio in RSS feeds, which is how updated content would find its way

There had been audio blogs and audio available on websites before, but podcasting was something entirely new.

Christopher Lydon is credited with being a pioneer in what became podcasting. This was around 2003.

Podcasts are useful for informing, entertaining, or promoting any number of things. A podcast can have as much benefit as the authors of the podcast would like. Podcasts are not very successful when it comes to making a profit, but podcasts can help keep interest in a site, alert listeners to what's new, or provide a source of criticism.

I listen to many podcasts throughout the day, which are mostly entertainment based.

As for if we can use podcasts on this site, I don't think that we users can do that.

Podcasting is online audio content that is delivered via an RSS feed. Many people liken podcasting to radio on demand. However, in reality, podcasting gives far more options in terms of content and programming than radio does. In addition, with Podcasting, listeners can determine the time and the place, meaning they decide what programming they want to receive and when they want to listen to it.

Listeners can retain audio archives to listen to at their leisure. While blogs have turned many bloggers into journalists, podcasting has the potential to turn podcasters into radio personalities.
