what is pavlova?

Tip for best answer: M$0.25
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

There are two answers to this:

1/ Anna Pavlova was a famous Russian ballet dancer. Born in 1881 in a suburb of St Petersburg, she studied at the renowned Imperial School of the Maryinsky Ballet. She did not have the strength or technique for the highly acrobatic Italian style of dancing which was in vogue at that time, but concentrated on her own strengths of femininity and grace. She became famous for this and excelled in such performances as the Dying Swan, Giselle, and Don Quixote. She had a solo career which lasted for some 20 years, during which time she travelled more widely across the world than any other ballet star. She invented the flat-toed ballet pointe shoe. Anna Pavlova died in 1931 of pluerisy.

2/ A Pavlova today is a wonderful Australian and New Zealand dessert. It is a cake of meringue with a crisp crust and a soft middle. It is highly decorated with fruit, usually strawberries and kiwi-fruit, but orange slices or other fruit may be substituted. I can tell you from personal experience that it is completely yummy!
"The Pav" was developed by an Australian or a New Zealand chef as a celebration of a tour by Anna Pavlova of our countries in the 1920's.

To be fair, I should give you the recipe. There are many variations of fruit used on the pav's, but I have chosen for you the one which looks the most like the ones we have at home on occasion. Hope you enjoy!

Pavlova is a desert that has a meringue shell, whipped cream, and fruit toppings.

There is a debate over whether it originated in Australia or New Zealand but everyone seems to agree that it was named after the Russian ballerina Anna Pavlova.

The quote, "It is as light as Pavola" is given as the reason for the name but the credit for that quote is also controversial.

Whatever the origins it sure sounds good to me!
