Pangaea, the preferred spelling of this large land mass today, was a large super continent, known to have been formed by several pieces that later broke apart, each of them being part of a mobile plate structure. These pieces were to eventually become the Earth's current continents. The time sequence of this process can be measured in millions of years and there are maps which show the long and slow paths of the continents to their current geographic positions. The relevance of understanding Pangaea is centered in the fact that people in the past believed that the present-day continents were just the broken pieces of larger and ancient masses of land.
