What is one significant event that that happened on September 2?

Today; what "significant" means is up to you. I will award the best answer to the Mahaloian who best presents their news in the most helpful and interesting manner.

Report on one news item from any of these four different categories.
  • Your Answer could be a significant historical news event that happened on September 2 in history.
  • Your Answer could be a preview of an event that has not happened yet. Is there anything planned to happen on this day in 2010 or later?
  • Your Answer could be what happened today from within the Mahalo community?

Whichever route you go, your answer must include a link to the source of your information.

If you don't earn best answer, I will still offer you a nice tip if I use your answer helps me make the September 2 Mahalo Page better.
Tip for best answer: M$6.05
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Breaking news:
Indonesia is literally shaken by a 7.4 strong earthquake 242 km (150 miles) from the capital, Jakarta.
The earthquake has lead to a tsunami alert, for all areas of the Indian Ocean.

So far, there are no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

I claimed Mahalo page Indonesia to add the news item, and to bring twitter to the top of the page.

Sadly, I've had to update the status of this news. There are now six deaths counted. Luckily, the tsunami warning is lifted.

Good thing there are no reports of injuries, but your right it is breaking news, the Mahalo News Network lives.

I wonder when they started calling it the ATM "machine". It makes no sense to call it the Automated Teller Machine machine. Excuse me, it's late here.

The idea of this topic is that you come up with new items, that haven't been mentioned before.. Both Great Fire and indonesian Earthquake have been addressed already. Maybe you can find something else that has a link to September 2? Please try again...

The Great Fire of London began on September 2, 1666. Though there are few recorded deaths, the flames destroyed a large portion of the oldest part of the city, including an estimated 13,500 homes, and displaced up to 200,000 individuals.

Negative Interest Rates at Swedish Riksbank! This news story broke over the wires today!

September 2, 2009
By Richard Barrington | Money-Rates Columnist

"A generation of depositors is currently seeing the lowest bank rates of their lives on CDs, savings, and money market accounts. As those rates approach zero, the natural assumption is that things can’t get much worse. Or can’t it?

It may be a little mind-bending to think about negative interest rates, but the concept does exist. The Swedish central bank recently pushed its deposit rate into negative territory, and a Financial Times columnist suggested that more central bankers should include negative interest rates in their bag of tricks.

Why would anyone sign up for a negative interest rate? Two reasons. One, if deflation persists — or steepens – a slightly negative interest rate can still represent an increase in purchasing power. Two, there is a cost to storing money and (especially) keeping it secure. Theoretically, having that done by a bank or other institution could be cheaper than doing it yourself, even if it meant essentially paying for it via a negative interest rate. Therefore, in a situation where both conditions existed, one could conceivably opt for a negative interest rate."

Negative interest rates, now that is a first! How about that for a winning entry into this contest. Do I get the prize again, Jeff? The actual effective date for the change, however, may have been earlier, but I thought it was the leading news story for today. I cannot even get into the Riksbank server, its so busy! I posted the red server busy message that I got. And the attached video was also posted today.

Oops, after posting, I notice you already chose an answer. I live in Hawaii, and it is still September 2nd, as I post. I know you are probably in bed, but it is only 10 PM here. September 2nd is not completely finished around the whole world, yet! And check the previous post only a few hours before mine. I bet his calendar still says September 2nd, 2009.

On September 2, 1945, Japan formally surrenders. This day is celebrated as Victory Japan Day.

Only with threats of further nuclear attacks did the Japanese accept the terms of surrender.
