Without the creation of the V2 rocket, we would not have the base for the space rockets or inter ballistic rockets that were focused on shortly after the war.

How did such an important event as the creation of Uganda not get voted Best Answer, I demand a recount!
Also we don't want to give too much credit to the Germans, they bombed our "fish & chip" shops in the war!
I seriously love this flag, here is its description:
"Six equal horizontal bands of black (top), yellow, red, black, yellow, and red; a white disk is superimposed at the center and depicts a red-crested crane (the national symbol) facing the hoist side."
I am getting nervous here...did I make a mistake?
Phew...I was nervous. :)

M$Thank you for the tip. I remember Fords' funeral vividly and I was sad that he didn't get the recognition for this one act that in hind sight truly did help our country heal and move on
Great answer @stokesstp. I found the original televised speech he made on TV, and thought it would compliment your answer.
I have faint memories of watching this myself, but I was too young to really see the implications that it had.

Over the years, the Pageant has continued to grow in size and popularity, carrying controversy along with it all the way. No matter one's opinion of the Miss America Pageant, whether it exploits women or promotes women, there is no doubt that it has become a mainstream part of Americana. Having gone from a simple beauty contest to "one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women," according to the Miss America web site, it has forever changed the way that women are seen by Americans and the rest of the world. M$You're welcome and thank you for your comment. I had no idea how the Miss America Pageant got its start, so this was really interesting for me to learn. Oh my, how the standard of dress has changed. :o) Oh, and I saw your Best Answer choice - excellent. It is just sad that it so often takes the worst that we humans can do to one another to bring out the best that we are capable of, in the end.
Excellent edition, thank you
Galveston, TX, was hit by a massive Hurricane that killed between 6,000 and 8,000 people, and left an estimated 10,000 homeless.
The storm came without a name — without warning — and it shaped the future of weather forecasting.
It's known simply as, The Great Storm of 1900.
The forecaster on duty in Galveston back then, Isaac Cline, had tried to issue a warning.
Cline's hands were tied rather badly by the Washington bureaucracy.
The U.S. Weather Bureau had forbidden Cline from issuing his own hurricane warning, it had to go through Washington first.
(Isaac Cline's wife was among the fatalities)
The hurricane swept through Galveston on September 5th 1900 killing between 6,000 and 8,000 people, making it the deadliest "tropical cyclone" in United States history.
Using today's methods to determine storm strength by such calculable evidence as storm surge — 15 and a half feet in Galveston that night — meteorologists have concluded that winds reached between 130 and 140 miles per hour, making this a Category 4 hurricane.
At the time forecasting was a matter of watching the horizon and the barometer to predict the whim of the elements. No early warning systems were in place.
In pitch darkness, people fought for their lives. Houses crumbled around them. A two-story high wall of debris steamrollered the island. Eyewitness accounts reveal that there was no island left — just the occasional roof of a once-proud building clearing the waves. Twenty percent of the population were killed.
One staggering fact remains: More people were killed in that storm than the more than 300 hurricanes that have hammered the United States since.

Written by Marian Hale
A 5 star rated Historical Fiction Book focusing on this hurricane.
The book can be found at a bargain price at amazon.com.
Too often historical fiction concerning the 1900 Storm is riddled with inaccuracies presented as fact or suffers from weak characters and a forced plot to incorporate the Storm. Marian Hale surpasses all of this.
I highly recommend it for all ages.

M$One-Seventh of Population Wiped Out
On September 8, 1900, one of the most severe West Indian hurricanes ever to lash the U.S. coast struck Galveston, Texas, with winds of 100 to 120 miles per hour and a 20-foot tidal wave which pushed the sea level 15 feet above normal.
Two thousand tons of rain fell on Galveston during the hurricane’s first 24-hour period. More than 6,000 persons, about one-seventh of the city’s total population, were killed, and an equal number were injured. The city was all but obliterated. At that time the fourth wealthiest city per capita in the U.S., Galveston suffered property losses in the millions of dollars.
