Frank and his brother, Charles Duryea, invented and built one of the first one cylinder gas powered vehicles they named "Ladies Phaeton". This vehicle was considered the first successful automobiles powered by gasoline.
The brothers also established the Duryea Motor Wagon Company in 1895 and became the first Americans to attempt to build and sell automobiles for a profit. Together, they successfully sold 13 identical gas powered vehicles before the company ended after three years.

The story of Bilbo, Gandalf, Thorin, and Smaug is a tale originally published for children. The original printing featured Tolkien's own black and white drawings, along with his own dust jacket design.
1500 copies were first printed and was a moderate success to start, selling out by Christmas. It was the launch of Tolkien's amazing and brilliant career that has endured through the decades, leading up to the production of a Hobbit movie to begin production in the hopefully not-too-distant future.

The Clearstream scandal dates back from 2004, when both men were running for president. A list showed up that claimed to list clients with secret bankaccounts with Luxembourg-based securities trading house, Clearstream. Sarkozy was on the list. Villepin had gotten his hands on this list, but instead of turning it over to the authorities, he asked a retired general to investigate it. It was proven to be a fake, but by that time it had leaked.

M$1969 - NY Jet Steve O'Neal punts 98 yards against Denver Broncos
This is an NFL record that stands to this day. I find it pretty amazing that as NFL players have gotten bigger, faster, and stronger, a record such as this still stands after 40 years.
The 2nd longest punt comes in at 94 yards back in 1931! And third place goes to Shawn McCarthy of the NE Patriots back in 1991 with a 93 yard boot! Guess they just don't kick 'em like they used to!
Here's how it happened:
On September 21, 1969 the New York Jets were taking on the Denver Broncos and the Jets were pinned on their own one-yard line.
The Jets sent in their secret weapon, Steve O’Neal, a rookie from Texas A&M, who took the punt from his own end line.
With a bit of help from the wind the ball flew 70 yards before taking a few good bounces, eventually being fielded by by the Lions Bill Thompson inside the one-yard-line.
Total length of of the longest punt in NFL history; 98 yards, breaking the 94 yard record that stood since November 16, 1931.

"America: A Tribute to Heroes" was shown on 35 seperate broadcast and cable networks simultaneously. It was one, if not the most, emotionally stirring telecast events of my life. The telethon raised $150 million in pledges to benefit families of the World Trade Center and Pentagon attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001.
The benefit concert was done in the style of a telethon, featuring a 'whos who' of national and international entertainers.
The event was organized by the actor George Clooney, and was broadcast by the four major United States television networks, running uninterrupted and commercial-free.

It was released on December 4, 2001 on compact disc and DVD.
In America, the concert was simulcast by over 35 network and cable channels.
Outside of the U.S., the program was distributed to 210 countries and the American Forces Network.
In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine selected this concert, along with the later The Concert for New York City, as one of the 50 moments that changed rock and roll.
Neil Young's majestic rendition of the song "Imagine"(John Lennon's classic, written in 1971) on the September 21st telethon America: A Tribute to Heroes, emerged as the anthem of 2001.

The broastcast was reported to have been viewed by over 60 million people by ABC news.
"This is a moment to pause and reflect, to heal and to re-dedicate ourselves to the American spirit of one nation indivisible," said actor Tom Hanks, following a performance by Bruce Springsteen, who sang "My City in Ruins."

M$He got tired of crawling on his face (due to one arm being 1/2 the length of the other) at about 9 months, and stood up and walked! He rode his tricycle before any "Normal" kid on the block! And he swam like a fish underwater alone without any flotation device at 11 moths old! He grew up and turned 19, and rolled a PERFECT 300 GAME in bowling (a feat many with two working and "normal" arms strive to do a lifetime)! So I did ask "WHY GOD"?? But He AND my son both answered me with a resounding, "WHY NOT"??!
Yep, Sept. 21.... significant for me always, as it was God's way of showing me never to be afraid of, or pity that which you have no knowledge of first hand. We ALL have our own "deformities", and just because someone is different, does not mean their lives are less full than a person deemed "NORMAL", and they can dream AND ACHIEVE their goals and dreams just the same as anyone else! They do not need pity, those with special needs or challenges, but they need encouragement and love, just like all of us do.

M$That event was - "Mahalo offline for hours". According to some members on twitter, it was offline since 12:30 p.m. and came back online around 7 or 8 o'clock p.m. It was scary, I actually went outside! :D

M$On September 21, 1897, Francis Pharcellus Church wrote the editorial "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus." After eight-year-old Virginia O'Hanlon wrote a letter to the New York Sun asking if there was a Santa Claus, her friends put doubts in her mind, Church took on O'Hanlon's question to address. His editorial remains the most reprinted editorial to run in any newspaper in English.
This further lead to the 1972 publishing of the children's book "Yes, Virigina" after O'Hanlon's death. This simple question of an eight-year-old unraveled into decades of references in popular culture, advertisements and books, and all because Francis Pharcellus Church decided on that one day in September to write his editorial to spread hope during a time of war.
