What is one significant event that happened on September 14?

Today; what "significant" means is up to you. Best answer goes to the Mahaloian who best presents their news in the most helpful and interesting manner.

Report on one news item from any of these four different categories.
  • Your Answer could be a significant historical news event that happened on September 14 in history.
  • Your Answer could be a preview of an event that has not happened yet. Is there anything planned to happen on this day in 2010 or later?
  • Your Answer could be what happened today from within the Mahalo community?

Whichever route you go, your answer must include a link to the source of your information.

On September 14, 1927, Isadora Duncan Dies in a freak automobile accident in Nice, France.

She was the pioneer of modern dance. A 'revolutionist' and feminist who brought new ideas to movement without a corset or restrictive clothing. She created a new and modern way of dancing by incorporating the ancient styles of Greece in both movement and clothing. She was also known for famously dancing barefoot!

Some additional information since you mentioned Isadora Duncan.
I am an avid collector of french art glass especially of the 1920s thru 1930s.
My favorite among those who produced works during this period is Marius Ernest Sabino.
Sabino developed a method of incorperating gold into molten glass during the molding process.
this method is still a tightly guarded family secret and nobody has been able to duplicate the process.
Sabino was infatuiated with Isadora Duncan and was emotionally devastated when he learned of her death while she was holidaying in Nice. It was reported that one of her trademark flowing scarves flew into the wheel of her speeding sports car strangling her to death.
Now no source has every verified it,but rumors and certain public circumstances have suggested that Sabino and Isadora had a secret love affair.
In 1930 Sabino personally created a very limited number( he never recorded just how many) of statuettes to commemerate this fasinating woman and to immortalize her in his glass. It is said that Sabino dismissed all of his workers for a number of days with double their pay so that he could create these pieces alone.
I have been collecting Pieces of Sabino's work for nearly 40 years and have a rather extensive collection. My Isadora has been one of my prize pieces since i was able to aquire about 30 years ago.
I'm including a picture of my piece that I recently took for insurance purposes, hope you enjoy it.

Both Sabino and Duncan are very interesting people from that period in history and well worth learning more about their lifes.
Here are a couple of links for anyone interested.

That was an interesting article. Thanks @shadowbear. As a child, I loved watching the movie Isadora with Vanessa Redgrave.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0063141/
The critics now give it very mixed (more negative) reviews.
Maybe now there can be another (better) tribute on film of her life.
To me she was as much a pioneer of women's rights as she was a dancer!

Today was historic for another reason...

Anyone who has followed American politics and our history has heard of the Kennedys. Today the first ever memoir by a Kennedy was released... ''True Compass'' by Ted Kennedy

Senator Edward Kennedy died just last month, but spent the last five years of his life putting his thoughts and emotions down for the world to share. He asked that it not be released until after his death, and even his own sons were surprised by the content.

In this autobiography, he wrote of the emotional upheaval he went through following the assassinations of his brothers, President John F Kennedy and Senator Robert Kennedy and gave a glimpse of what was really going on in the private world of his mind, while he was showing a stoic face to the world at large.

You can read more about it at the Mahalo page for the Ted Kennedy Memoir, and watch a video interview with his sons from the Today show this morning.

I think the Kennedy family has been so significant to American politics, it could have its own timeline.

The Kennedys Timeline

and it would be ongoing, since we still have very visual examples of Kennedys now, from Maria Shriver to Representative Patrick Kennedy... they are still very much a part of our ongoing political scene.

I also noticed you don't have any kind of timeline for politics... things like the first black President certainly deserve a place on a timeline, whether it is a Presidential Timeline or American Political Timeline. Lots of firsts and significant events that could be listed there.

On September 14, 1716 the first lighthouse was lit in the United States. It was lit in the Boston Harbor. George Worthylake became the first Lighthouse keeper on this date in 1716.

@lindalstcyr - After looking at your answer, I pulled up some links to see some lighthouse pictures. I found this link
http://www.lighthousefriends.com/light.asp?ID=473
that talks about the tragic death of Mr. Worthylake who drowned! It also says:

"A young Benjamin Franklin wrote a poem about it entitled “The Lighthouse Tragedy” and sold copies of it on the streets."

Thanks for showing me something new today!

This is a great answer @domr94!
I started poking around since I wanted to know the year (1959), and I came across this 'newsreel' about the event. I like the end where the announcer says
"Moscow shot for the moon... and scored a bulls eye!"
(thought you might like to see the video too!)

On September 14th 1692 the then Governor Diego de Vargas and after an exile of 12 years, led Spanish colonists to Santa Fe New Mexico to retake the city after the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. He succeeded.

To this day Diego de Vargas is revered as the most prominent governor and Spanish nobleman and now perceived great recolonizer. The time between 1680 and 1710 was a time of extremes of cultural diversity and upheaval in New Mexico and this governor played the crucial role.

** There is room for interpretation of the word "recolonizer" depending on which side of the "recolonization" you were on.

I'm not quite sure this should be September 14 or September 13, but I only learned of it on September 14.

On September 14 2009, an audio message from Osama Bin Laden emerged. It has been months since the last message from Bin Laden, and he has only released audio messages since.

Part of the content of the audio message:
"To the American people, this is my message to you: a reminder of the reasons behind 9/11 and the wars and the repercussions that followed and the way to resolve it," the message said.

"From the beginning, we have stated many times ... that the cause of our disagreement with you is your support of your allies, the Israelis, who are occupying our land in Palestine. Your stance along with some other grievances are what led us to carry out the events of 9/11."

Obama was "a vulnerable man who will not be able to stop the war, as he promised, but instead he will drag it to the maximum possible extent," the message said.

Source: http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/09/14/binladen.message/index.html (I add the source as this text is a literal Copy-Paste from CNN)

1868 - Golf's 1st recorded hole-in-one (Tom Morris at Prestwick's 8th hole)
1930 - Detroit Lions (as Portsmouth Spartans) play 1st NFL game, win 13-6

Hi @tsweetz - and welcome to Mahalo!
I didn't know anything about 'Old Tom Morris' until I saw your entry!

I hope you continue to participate in the daily history thread!

Pointers: Pick one cool event (both of your were cool by the way...) and give a little more information or reflection on the event.

(I found some old footage of Mr. Morris on YouTube to add to your answer)
Glad to see a new face around here!

On September 14, 1814, Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to the Star-Spangled Banner, the U.S.A.'s national anthem. It was originally written as a poem of four stanzas, although people only sing the first one.

The story behind his inspiration to write came about when Key, being a lawyer, was assigned to negotiate for the release of a certain elderly doctor named William Beanes, who was captured by the British forces after the burning of Washington, D.C. Although the release came through, Beanes and Key were not allowed to leave for Baltimore as they overheard plans of an oncoming battle. Key was forced to stay overnight on a ship while Fort McHenry, one of the forts surrounding Baltimore, was being shelled.

At dawn, Key was surprised to see the flag still proudly flying amidst the destruction. When he finally finished the four stanzas, he gave it to his brother-in-law and it eventually made its way to print with the title, "The Defence of Fort McHenry." In time, it was matched with the tune of "Anacreon in Heaven" and in time was adopted as the country's national anthem with its new title, The Star-Spangled Banner."

1982: Princess Grace of Monaco, formerly American film actor Grace Kelly, dies of injuries she received in an automobile accident the previous day. She was only 53. Why is this significant? The marriage of Grace Kelly to Prince Ranier III of Monaco in 1956 was a genuine fairytale come true.

Academy Award-winning American film star Grace Kelly focused international attention on Monaco and bolstered its reputation as a glamorous playground for the wealthy when she became Princess Grace of Monaco.

Grace Patricia Kelly was born in Philadelphia. In 1952, she starred with Gary Cooper in the western High Noon. In 1954, she won an Academy Award for her role in The Country Girl. High Society, a musical version of The Philadelphia Story, and The Swan were released in 1956. That same year she retired from films to marry Prince Rainier III of Monaco.

On 14th September 1879 - Margaret Sanger, the outspoken early twentieth-century advocate of birth control, was born. She was the founder of the American Birth Control League. She was initially met with opposition, Sanger gradually won some support for getting women access to contraception. In her drive to promote contraception and negative eugenics, Sanger remains a controversial figure.

@tdware82... either you are very well read and have a photographic memory =)
or you copied this from somewhere.

I'd like to welcome you to Mahalo and let you in on a little bit of what makes us different from other answers sites. At Mahalo, we want to hear what YOU know. If you learn something through research, we want you to tell us about it in your own words, then cite the reference you used to learn what you have shared.

In case you haven't seen it yet, we have a page just about copy and paste practices. Just click the link to learn how it works.

Other sites just spout the information... here we learn and share and give credit to the references we use.

I'm glad to see you've joined us, and I look forward to seeing more of your answers. I can tell you know how to do the research just by the answer you've given... and I'm excited to see how you grow from here.

We value every single answer here... and every single member.

So, welcome again... and I'm sure I'll see you around. =)
