What is new in Mahalo 3.0?

Tip for best answer: M$3.80
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

A lot of things! The changes that come with M3.0 are alterations to how the site looks and some minor functional changes. Here are some of the brand-new things you'll see over the coming 1-2 weeks:

1.) NEW FRONT PAGE-
Glowing blue background with heavy emphasis on getting new users to ask a question. The search bar for Mahalo pages has been moved down the page and de-emphasized. Highlights from Mahalo Answers will scroll just underneath, followed by gorgeous photographic highlights of featured Mahalo Pages. The front page is sleek, organized, and simple.

2.) NEW MAHALO PAGE FEATURES & APPEARANCE -
Taking on a substantially different look, the new Mahalo Pages have the following changes:

- Soft blue background matching front page theme
- The sidebar is now on the right side
- Fast Facts have been relegated to a small inset dark blue box at top of page
- Guide Notes are no longer in the sidebar, but are in main section at top
- New "ask a question" box is at top of right sidebar
- New ad is in right sidebar
- Your toolbar for manipulating page sections has simplified, it now only has buttons for EDIT, PIN, DRAG, and DELETE.
- When you edit a section, a new window opens up for editing.
- When you edit a section, there are now toolbar buttons to add bullets, numbers, citations, or hotlinks
- While editing a section, you can now SAVE and continue editing.
- When you delete a section, you are asked for confirmation of the deletion. Phew!
- We can now add new sections to our pages including "Coupons", "Shopzilla", "eBay", and "Stock Quotes"
- The Twitter section has now moved to the sidebar
- We have the ability to add ads to our pages
- "View Page History" now works
- The Related Pages section has been cleaned up to look neater, stacking the page names
- No More "Mahalo Top 7" section.
- Each page now has a few applicable categories listed at the top just under page title

...and many more changes just waiting for us to discover!

3.) NEW VERTICAL MANAGERS!
Starting this week, Vertical Managers (or VMs) will begin work helping to make pages successful. Their role (as explained by Lon Harris) will be to work with Page Managers to promote pages, help keep them updated, watch pages to make sure they're being appropriately updated, proofreading pages, and overall assisting Page Managers.

The Vertical Managers will usually be responsible for thousands of pages within 1 or 2 specific categories and will earn 20% of Adsense revenue from pages they are assigned to (Mahalo will collect 40%, and the Page Manager will collect 40%). More and more VMs will be added over time and are being selected by Mahalo staff.

4.) NEW MAHALO ANSWERS APPEARANCE
Oh, the mystery! Mahalo Answers will get a face lift sometime this week (most likely). The changes are supposed to make Answers simpler and easier to understand for new users. (I'm betting it'll have a soft blue background too!)

5.) NEW MAHALO TASKS APPEARANCE
Just as with Answers, expect this page to get a face lift....and maybe more?

6.) MAHALO HOW TO PAGE!
You have to see it to love it!:

- New blue theme (a-course!)
- Search bar at top for how to pages
- Large ad for users to build how to pages and earn money!
- A link at the top to learn how to join the how to team
- Sections for browsing Popular and Featured How Tos, and questions relating to How Tos
- In the right side bar, look for a page builder leaderboard (go @camilla!)
- A counter at top of page listing how many How To pages there are! (5,060 at present)

7.) NEW USER PROFILE CHANGES
You likely won't see too many changes to the way our profiles are set up, but take a look at how we look in blue!

I'm sure there are many other tweaks and changes beside these, especially as more things are unveiled this coming week. Happy exploring, and happy 3.0!

Well @k2k, I never argued the fairness of the divisions, I just reported them as the question demanded.

But since you're asking my opinion: I think Page Managers potentially stand to make a lot more money for having a VM on board. Consider as evidence, if you will, that Mahalo is also taking the same 20% reduction in page revenue. Now, Jason Calacanis is a pretty sharp cookie and so is the rest of the Mahalo staff. Do you really believe they'd give themselves such a sharp paycut if they didn't really believe that VMs would increase quality and traffic to sites? Remember, Mahalo's in this to make money.

Plus I personally think it makes a lot of sense. VMs are a huge team player to aid Page Managers, helping with advertising, giving update ideas, and promoting the category and page building opportunities through Barn Raisings.

As a Page Manager, if you choose to see this only as a negative and want to "force" VMs to earn their pay, then it sounds like you probably shouldn't be managing pages to begin with. The whole goal with page management is to make the best possible pages and draw in the largest possible audience. VMs are a tool to make this even more possible. This is an opportunity.

And remember, if you really want to stomp your feet and make only the most minimal improvements to your page "rather than being proactive", then the GOOD NEWS is that 20% of 10 cents isn't a huge loss for you, is it? ;D I keed, I keed.

Seriously though, treat this as the opportunity it is. :)

Under the new plan a 20% reduction in revenue (50% down to 40%) for page managers is a pretty steep cut. Will a vertical really point out enough improvements in a page to increase page revenue by 20% so a page manager breaks even compared to past? Doesn't this plan produce negative incentives to maintain pages? A page manager might as well wait for the vertical to point out an improvement (to earn their cut which is half of what page manager gets) rather than being proactive and the vertical getting the cut anyway without having done anything.

I'm sure Mahalo will have a more complete list shortly. These are my observations about Mahalo 3 from perspective of page manager.

1) Every page (that is managed) now has a wider left-hand column than right (how-to pages were like this in Mahalo 2)
2) Some of information on left column now on right: Related Pages are moved to the right - now in rows. Mahalo 2 had some pages with Related Pages in rows - other pages had page 1 | page 2 | page N.
3) About this page and page manager on lower rightmost column.
4) Ask any Question now more prominent in upper right corner
5) Twitter feeds now more prominent (just below ask question). In past could have been at bottom of page.
6) Fast Facts now in a "middle" column. This means more prominent than in past. But page manager will now have to balance length of fast facts with the length of the guide so the "white space" is minimized. If you have too many fast facts but a short guide note then fast fact looks out of place. I think Mahalo QC will have to change their standards from # fast facts to length of fast facts.
7) New toolbars for page managers. Fewer icons but I suspect sub-menus. I haven't been brave enough to try.
8) Most of the content on the right column in Mahalo 2 moved to left column (except as mentioned above the Twitter feed)
9) The Top 7 seems to have gone away.

There are no doubt more but these are first impressions (visually).

you did such a great job detailing that, i'll just add some as a comment instead of another answer.

have to say, your #7... i totally agree... i haven't touched it yet. =)

#6... @lon said it was going to have a set length that it can't go past... it will have the option to "see more fast facts" which they can click to see the rest.... same for related pages. That way it will never look too long, but will be available for the visitor

Overall we have a new look and new colors... especially the front page. Focus is on answers.

And the one thing that is brand new and huge is the addition of vertical managers. Two people to help with every page in topics.

The left side bar is empty. Page builder tools are on the right side top. There are 3 boxes on the Edit : To content, To links and to side bar. I am still trying to make understand what they actually do.
While editing a part, you have 3 options now, save, save and continue, and cancel. Save and continue is a new feature. In either way, you save or save and continue, the item will be saved. To continue, you need to press the edit button again.
I have noticed there are more white areas on the page, which is a design feature. On the edit view, each section has 4 buttons. One to pin, one to edit, one to move and one to delete. When you delete something, it will ask to confirm, " do you want to delete". That I think, is a good feature, so I won't delete by mistake. Now buttons are blue on the grey background, which is soothing to the eye.
Asking the question has more importance in the topic pages, which is the stong Mahalo specialty. I mean the questions and answers.
Anyway, I can't make the featured Object move in a way I wanted to. It is like it is glued to the position. Also, I know I can't move something from left to right.
Also, I cannot figure out '''how to request a task''' yet.
The front page of Mahalo is very aesthetically pleasing. Hope, the pictures and content will change periodically.

You suggest new topic pages just like before: search for what you want, and then request M$ to build that topic page. The topic page search bar has moved way down on the Mahalo front page.
